Chapter 16
As soon as Zane and Akira disappear into the shadow of trees, an aching gasp escapes me, and I buckle. My body feels so weak and heavy. I didn’t realize how much Zane’s hand had been an anchor. Now without it, my body seems to remember just how drained it is.
“Ayane! Ayane, are you alright?!”
Houseki’s startled yelp bounces around in my mind and I feel her head butt against my hand. I close my eyes to ward off the dark spots dancing around my vision and stand completely still. Houseki gives my hand a few licks and I reach out to blindly touch her scruff.
“Listen to your packmate. You should return to your den and rest for a while.”
